Re: Canadian Professor Criticizes Cancel Culture

I had forgotten that Steven Pinker is Canadian.

I really loved his book "The Blank Slate", which I read when I was ~19. It critiqued the ideas of the blank slate, the tabula rasa, and the ghost in the machine.

We can't trust one single thing we hear about this virus. Not one. All we can do is use our own eyes and judge for ourselves. How many people have you personally know who have had this disease? Do you know anyone who has died? Is your local hospital overflowing? I know somebody who knows somebody w...

Masks are likely not advisable for people who are working out, working in physically exerting jobs, or who have respiratory issues. They may also not be advisable for children. In those cases people should consult with a health professional, and do their own research if they can. I recently took off...

Re: Canada’s five big banks join anti-hate advertising boycott of Facebook

Having a mass exodus of users from Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram would probably be more effective in leading to a significant change in moderating policies, which is what these activists are claiming to be after. In contrast, having large corporations withdraw their support for a month will not ...

Fear is a human emotion that like any other emotion, it can be manipulated. Nevertheless, we are richer experiencing it in the right context, than we would be if we did not experience it. We should be afraid when dealing with high-risk situations for which failure can be catastrophic. In this case, ...

I wish that everybody or nearly everybody in the USA would wear masks willingly, without being ordered to. We'd have this under control by now.

As an example, South Korea, with one sixth of the US population, has had ~400x fewer deaths.

I've bee to one such gathering, last week. People mostly wore masks, and we're very well dispersed. It wasn't a standard political gathering where people can be packed like sardines, rather, there was an average of maybe 10 feet separating people. Sometimes two or three people were together.

IMO, people should give apologies if they mean it to the people whom they aggrieved. A genuine apology for something non-trivial includes at least some of an explanation for what led to the action, and plans to prevent the actions from being repeated in the future. Though I approve of public apologi...

Driving through DC, which I have done multiple times, is actually very difficult to do. That latter number is ~6.3 million, but there are probably a lot of people...

We can't just go back to how things were, not yet, because even if businesses open again, people are not going to go back. Re: Can Canadians handle another lockdown? Our governments aren’t sure

A problem is that the focus of the Covid fight has changed. Initially it was to flatten the curve: push infections forward in time to avoid a spike in cases that would overwhelm the heath system. The lockdown helped do that and now we have to open up and accept the infections that were avoided befo...

One of the things that caught my eye is that people who had it and were over it now have it a second time. That includes 8 sailors on the Roosevelt carrier but also regular civilians here and there. What's with that? Covid-19 is a cousin of the common cold virus. In the same way that you can catch ...

What I found out recently is that this apparently happens for every epidemic, even for those which are much more severe such as the 1918 flu.
