The government of Canada has awarded an estimated $6.8 million contract to a state-owned Chinese company to supply security equipment for 170 embassies, consulates and high commissions around the globe.

The contract for conveyor-style X-ray machines was awarded to Beijing-based Nuctech Company, a company owned by the Chinese government and founded by the son of former General Secretary of the Chinese Communist Party, Hu Jintao.

Common sense has fled Ottawa. Any rational person would think to include a thorough security check on the contractors bidding for installation of equipment in sensitive government buildings. If our embassies, consulates and high commissions are not trading in highly sensitive information, why do we have them?

It is not just our information at risk, but the information from all of the nations we deal with. We do not want other nations to avoid us because of the “China connection”. We have managed to appear as spineless idiots unwilling to stand up for the principles our government claims to have.

Selling out to the lowest bidder, which is owned by a nation that treats us with contempt, is revolting.
