COVID-19 is being blown out of proportion - Change my mind

Post by Connie Fournier »

I am becoming far more concerned about the lock-down than I am about the virus.

I posted this on Facebook and they deleted it:

The author claims that the media is misleading everyone by claiming the flu death rate is 0.1%. No so. He is interested in the case fatality rate (CFR) while the media focuses on the infected fatality rate (IFR). This article in today's NP points out that the IFR is more in accord with what we think of as disease death rates.

I agree that it has been treated as a more dangerous threat than the reality suggests and that in past winters we have had flu outbreaks that took considerable numbers of lives in a similar way, without these economic and social consequences. However, I am also suspicious that our governments have intel about the future course of this outbreak that have caused them to react the way they have, perhaps knowing more than we do about second waves or mutations.

The timing is very suspect of course, and the points of origin and circumstances of the spread. It seems that death tolls in Italy are being presented artificially high by assigning COVID-19 as a cause of death in any case where any terminal patient already in treatment for some other major medical condition(s) tested positive in autopsy.

We clearly cannot sustain the economic consequences of the total lockdown very much past the first of April so in political terms there is very likely to be a strong counter-movement calling for a return to normalcy and taking more targeted precautions at hot spots, I think many would probably prefer to take their chances on getting and surviving the virus, than being locked down for any extended period of time.

There is a Biblical feel to this and oddly enough our pal Chairman Xi fits one description rather well, he was 66 years and 6 months old in December of 2019 (when the Wuhan outbreak began). Whether this is the big show or a dress rehearsal remains to be seen. But as some know, I think these events are overdue and likely to happen in our near future.

There is also a problem of confirmation bias with this over-response. If the outbreak subsides and death tolls fall, our governments will claim success and use this as a precedent. What might have happened in a less draconian response (as a control experiment) can never be known, so the truth of that cannot be tested.

The only thing I can compare this to might be the infamous "War of the Worlds" radio broadcast of 1938 where millions were duped into thinking Martians were attacking the earth. The power of mass suggestion and frequent repetition of dubious propositions is of course the hallmark of totalitarian societies. Increasingly, more and more come to believe in the veracity of these propositions. A similar phenomenon can be observed with the climate change hysteria which seems to have convinced a half to two-thirds of the population that a global catastrophe is imminent. Given that mind-set, one needs to be watchful in this current situation, in case there is any plan to morph from fighting COVID to fighting climate change under the same set of rules (die slowly at home, it's for your own good).

At this time don't forget your pets. Sox the Red Sox cat requires a speciality food (urinary tract) not sold in supermarkets. I can only get it at vet clinics and some pet stores. It's expensive and some stores are closing down.

It cost me $2,340. to save his life in pet hospital a year ago. I have two bags being held for me for this morning. He'll be good into summer. I only thought of this yesterday out of the blue.

I credit my 10 months old son for keeping me sane in these tough times. Seeing him play & laugh like nothing was happening in the outside world both lift my spiirit and remind me of my duty to keep him safe.

I make sure my familly does it's part to stay safe from the virus. Besides that, I can only hope than enough people will follow the instructions from the health autorities to keep the pandemy at a manageable level.

Italy had 793 deaths from the virus in the past 24 hours. That's scary!

Well, Italy had established some direct trade relations with China and not just there but with Hubei province where Wuhan is located. Up until the outbreak began, there was a lot of direct travel back and forth between northern Italy and Wuhan. So unfortunately their result is worse than anywhere else. I don't trust what China has said about the outbreak being contained and there are horror stories circulating on the internet about what's really going on in Wuhan now, such as thousands being forced to stay in their apartments and not always receiving any further help. Apparently this outbreak started because of some messed up experiments (or maybe not messed up) at the Wuhan biological lab looking into diseases that could be transmitted from bats to humans. Bats decided to be helpful and speed up the research by biting some guy. The possibility that none of this is an accident has to be considered since China is basically a thug regime boiling mad at North America for trade issues and the arrest of that top level Huawei exec. Just because our media ignores these facts does not make them irrelevant to our understanding of what's really going on. And we have this bland smiley-face image of chairman Xi but he's every bit a monster like Mao Tse Tung was, and there we're talking about a guy who thought nothing of creating a social revolution that led to forty million deaths. We know what China has done to minorities, to Christians, and especially to Tibet. So we know they have no conscience and no developed sense of human rights as we might understand them. And they have their eyes on our countries as possible expansion areas once we start to show signs of weakness. In my opinion, our own leader is nothing much more than a useful idiot serving their interests. This is why our government has been criminally negligent in terms of allowing continued flights between China and Canada. If this does get bad (especially around BC) then our government will be one of the main culprits.

I don't like this "Joker" look that the PM has affected recently. It points to a sort of hidden personality disorder but I think maybe his colleagues have caught on to this and are slowly easing him out of the top spot. Not that most of them are much of an improvement.

The police are now going to be following people and arresting them if they violate quarantine or social distancing rules.

Nobody is putting an expiration date on these "temporary" measures.

This is alarming.

Won't they have to violate the social distance to make an arrest?

My feeling is this is some kind of mass hysteria that jumped over from the Greta Thunberg style of climate alarmism, nobody bought into it so elites figure they will enforce their angst under the cover of this apparently medium-sized health emergency. A few months into this, elites will inform us that the economic shutdown appears to be cooling the planet so we will stay with it for several more years. Trump has been playing along to save his re-election chances but at some point he is going to have to draw a line and retreat from the brink. Otherwise the voters will dump him anyway figuring that they should have somebody who gets along better with the rest of the overseers. We will be into very harsh rationing by the autumn at this rate and death panel territory after that. In other words, welcome to the PRC.

Thinking we may have to go underground pretty soon.

On another site, somebody who calls themselves a small-c conservative figures that a solution will be to confiscate 80% of the wealth of people who are worth more than half a million. I'm guessing he's worth about $490,000.

On this subject of "blown out of proportion" there are interesting statistics floating around out there. These seem to indicate that despite the obviously significant impact of COVID-19 at least in some localized areas and especially among the elderly with compromised immune systems, the overall death rate from pneumonia is decreasing in both the USA and in Europe. The total death toll from all sources is declining even more rapidly. Speculation in on-line discussions is that, if these statistics are valid, the cause might be a decrease in total exposure to all forms of infectious diseases and a greater readiness to seek medical attention for the other less lethal types at an earlier stage (this being accomplished before the lockdown phase too). Also with fewer people on the roads, there are probably a reduced number of traffic accident fatalities.

Does this imply that we have seen an over-reaction to COVID-19? Possibly not, perhaps it just means that as an unpredicted consequence of this problem, other background problems that we are more used to dealing with, have declined in their impacts. It would be ironic if COVID-19 on some statistical level resulted in fewer deaths in total. But the problem is, the media and governments can quite easily focus on the actuality of clusters of deaths from COVID-19, whereas nobody can identify whose lives have been spared by not catching an infectious influenza of a more ordinary type, or who stayed home and didn't get into that fatal accident. But it was probably that guy. Yes, that guy.

To put the coronavirus into perspective, a good benchmark is what happens every year with the flu. Flu kills about 3,500 Canadians and 250,000 - 500,000 worldwide each year. And that is with influenza vaccines and no protective measure can beat immunity.

I had a new motorcycle delivered yesterday. They have six dealer locations throughout Alberta. The one I dealt with has laid off 12 staff already. They're huge with 7 brands between motorcycles, snow machine, marine, power equipment, etc. The late spring is one thing but the virus is killing the economy.

So the word now from CNN is that ANY death is being attributed to Coronavirus for the purposes of more funding. People on Long Island, NY are tracking hospital deaths which have nothing to do with Covid-19 but are being attributed to it.

My wife's in the hospital (Not COVID related). My parents are forbidden from leaving their appartment, even to use the garbage chute.

Great. Just great!

Jean, I own my condo in a 55+ building. I'm 20 years younger than my neighbours. I just made the age cut when I bought in. People are terrified. I'm taking a shopping list walking to Sobey's. The store has an hour in the morning for seniors and disabled only but people are scared so I get their needs for them.

I personally have a doctor's appt. next week. My heart is racing and medication has been adjusted 3 times to get it slowed - which has been gradually working. The appt. this coming week will be him phoning me. How can my heart rate be registered on a phone call? What about health care having nothing to do with Covid-19?

Ontario family hit with $880. fine as dad goes rollerblading with sons in empty park. Sheer madness.

I intend to be on quiet rural backroads motorcycling within a week. There can be NOTHING with "safer distancing" than motorcycling on an empty country lane.

I'm glad your heart problem is improving, Duane!

I figure it is only a matter of time until I wind up in Facebook jail because I am being outspoken about not taking an inadequately-tested vaccine. FD is ready and waiting if we need it. :-)

I have been ordering some take out meals from the local pub. Today I was chatting with the manager (across a vast distance) and we were talking about the eventual re-opening which seems possible now by end of May as this province announced phased return to slightly more normal conditions. He was saying it might be difficult to obtain enough of a customer return to make operations feasible. So I was saying maybe a name change to the "I See You" Pub.

As to facebook and its mind control aspects, one day perhaps a viable alternative will become widely known and used and we can go back to a more open sharing of opinions. It is already a bit awkward when you have various friends of friends obviously much further to the left and whatever about sharing memes and commentary -- I would get off there completely but I need the platform to get into my Irish weather community.

Not sure if we'll ever get this project back to any semblance of its former levels of activity but hey, it's worth a try.

I have to admit that I am feeling depressed. The totalitarian swing by our governments (even the "conservative" ones) has me shaken.

I heard that Trudeau might be planning an election in the fall. It would be a brilliant move on his part. Conservatives are not ready to meet that challenge, and, from what I see, the number of Canadians who are enjoying is daily cash giveaways could well give him the majority he seeks.

Not that he needs it to turn our country into a socialist paradise, mind you.

It's fairly common for minority governments to bring about an election within two years, that happened with the 1957 and 1958 parliaments. When St laurent was replaced by Diefenbaker, it didn't happen all at once, the first of these two elections was a minority government that the Liberals could not manage, so they rolled the dice and lost big. Recall that we had this same cycle with Paul Martin 2004 and I think Jan 2006? Same end result.

Justin probably figures with all the cash he's handed out and the disarray of the opposition in general, the people will return in full force to voting Liberal and he can get back to the sunny ways and let Freeland and Morneau do his job for him. Oh and also Blair apparently.

It's a dictatorship by consent in this country, always has been and probably always will be, the problem seems to be that classic concepts of individual liberty are so associated with America in the Canadian psyche that people are willing to reduce their own freedoms to avoid doing anything that can be seen as remotely pro-American. If I were younger I would probably just say might as well move to America then, but of course that's easier said than done (in English, apparently in Spanish it's fairly easy).

By the way, congrats on the major content push on this forum, that might get some wider discussion going.

I think the lockdown aspects will fade away gradually for the rest of the year and people may get back into a more normal frame of mind, it might lead to a more questioning and less accepting social theme, so we're in there on the ground floor.
